the truest

and highest

version of you

Feeling stuck happens to us all and it can be frustrating. Getting unstuck often requires the perspective and support of good friends, family members or an experienced professional.

In contrast, the experience of personal growth can be exhilerating, a source of great joy. Some professional would go as far as to say that happiness IS progress.

Nurturing our mental and emotional wellbeing is key to the development which we all long for.

My work is about facilitating growth through building self-worth, resilience and awareness of our inherent potential  and significant inner resources.

Work-related Ill Health

Anxiety and Youth

Anxiety and Youth

In the last five years, I have seen an increasing number of people coming to see me about anxiety-related issues. What stands out to me is the large proportion of that are under twenty-year-olds and teenagers. When anxiety levels are high, especially for those...

It is widely accepted that modern life weighs heavily on our wellbeing. If you are feeling burdened, it is not surprising, there are so many life-pressures to manage. I consider it my role to support you and share tried and tested strategies which will enable you to handle the difficulties and move you from coping and towards thriving.

You are not alone. Yearning for change is a very human thing, your inner voice speaks to you, longing for growth and the realisation of your potential. Deep inside, you know that life can be more complete, feel better, more satisfying, more connected, less burdened, less anxious and less stressed. Sometimes you just need assistance in realising that potential.

Welcome to my site. It’s a mix of info about what I do, what I consider to be important principles for life and a bit about me. Because the work I do is important to each client, I wanted this site to have a serious tone, and yet, informality is part of how I work. So, hopefully, it will convey an idea of who I am, what I believe and how we can work together.  Thanks for reading.

What I do

Humans are incredible, we have so much potential. We are walking, talking treasure troves of resources, skills, creativity, talent, strengths, abilities… yet we can feel rubbish about life and who we are. I consider it my role and privilege to facilitate the awakening (or reawakening) of these resources and hopefully a change in how you feel and behave.

Emotional and psychological wellbeing is what I love to learn about and what I love to work with. Over the years, I have learned through my many roles that what often holds us back are things like the influences of our past, the pressures of modern life and the limiting beliefs we unknowingly hold.

Our bodies, brains, and minds evolve and adapt to the situations we find ourselves in. We are constantly changing and developing. Together we can steer those changes.

I use my broad training in transactional analysis, psychotherapy, mindfulness, counselling, hypnotherapy and the lessons learned from being a father, husband and businessman (including many failures & flaws) along with my own battles with depression and low confidence to promote and inspire growth.

Choosing a professional to work with, such as a therapist or coach, isn’t the easiest decision. I offer a free 15-minute chat (face-to-face, Skype or on the phone) to help make that process a little easier.

Face-to-face appointments and classes are available in Cambridge and Abbots Ripton, Huntingdon and online. I also offer training within organisations at all levels.

Learning in a class environment delivers a rich experience as attendees learn from each other. Classes are conducted with a nonjudgmental spirit and atmosphere of acceptance.

Events & Talks

With 15 years experience of co-owning a physiotherapy clinic, a background in the study of beliefs, and the heart, mind and body, I have developed a passion for inspiring others to care for their wellbeing.

My YouTube channel has guided meditations, tips for life and guidance from great teachers I have learned from. You can also listen to the podcast I host with my colleague, John Fleming: 3 People In Your Head.

We all hold the potential to have peace, joy, love, happiness, success, and fulfilment. I believe the path to these is hope and faith in ourselves. Sometimes it just takes another to believe in us to begin this journey.

Building self-worth, resilience & resourcefulness

Together, exploring and discovering how you feel, what you want, how to change and how to build the life you long for – because it can be different, it can be better.

You are OK, you have all you need within you – you always have had.

mental health

you’re not alone

So many of us are struggling, often in silence, with mental health concerns:

Nearly half (43.4%) of adults think that they have had a diagnosable mental health condition at some point in their life.  In 2014, 19.7% of people in the UK aged 16 and older showed symptoms of anxiety or depression. About one-third of adults in England report having experienced at least one traumatic event in their lifetime.

2014 Adult Psychiatric Morbidity Survey (APMS)

If you are going through a difficult time and need to talk about it, please do not hesitate to contact me.

  • adults who think they’ve had a mental health condition: 43%
  • Over 16s showing symptoms of anxiety or depression – 19%
  • adults having experienced at least one traumatic event – 31%

online appointments

Zoom and FaceTime are platforms which allow us to connect virtually, talking face-to-face while being miles apart. For some of us, talking on the phone is good enough but if you prefer to be able to see a person’s face, this may be a good alternative.

If you don’t live in Cambridge or Huntingdon but you think I might be the person to assist you on your journey of growth and change, contact me and we can organise a virtual meeting. Because I’m able to conduct these meetings from my home, the fee for an online session is slightly less than a face-to-face appointment.

experience and empathy

Experience as a practitioner is important but not the most important thing, I believe the best clinicians are the ones who are skilled, genuinely care and really listen. I also believe that life experience influences the ability of a therapist in their work but this is not necessarily linked to age. Some of the younger therapists I have met are not only full of empathy but they have lived rich and textured lives too.

I have had the privilege of receiving a very broad education. I studied science at University (Microbiology). I learned loads about people, beliefs and values when I trained and practised as a minister of religion for eight years. I have built a thriving wellbeing clinic with my wife and I trained as a hypnotherapist in 2006 with the brilliant Rod Piggot. I have continually learned about the mind, studying many forms of therapy including mindfulness, CBT and counselling and I am now a student of Transactional Analysis Psychotherapy and honoured to be tutored by the exceptional Adrienne Lee.

 Transactional Analysis podcast

As a therapist, I am passionate about sharing resources and strategies that can transform a person’s understanding of who they are and how they relate to others and the world. Transactional Analysis (TA) is a clear and comprehensive system that does just that and more.

I am excited to be sharing the privilege of launching a Transactional Analysis Podcast with my good friend and colleague John Fleming. The podcast is primarily to promote TA to the wider public as well as to be enjoyed by those well-versed in TA. We will be interviewing some very esteemed expert guests. We hope it will be a great source of knowledge, wisdom and inspiration.

The podcast launches later in 2019 but there will be intro recordings for you to listen to before that. We hope you enjoy!

KIND WORDS From Clients
I have been very lucky to have the opportunity to work with a wide variety of wonderful people in all kinds of settings.

“The very first visit to Matt helped me to change my life (sounds corny, but it’s true). He makes you feel relaxed and completely at ease. The combination of hypnotherapy and just talking helped reveal what had been troubling me for years, without even knowing it. I cannot thank him enough for the freedom and positive attitude I now experience in my life.”

Sue Clifton

“Thank you for how you have helped me. After being laughed at for so many years…I thought I would have to live with my problems for the rest of my life. So thank you for actually understanding and helping me so much… I have never felt so relaxed or at peace as I was when I was away and after that my exams were easy!! So thank you again for all you did to help me to make changes that improve my life every day!!”

Jodi Groves

“Matt was very good at explaining the process and put me at ease right away. He said it would probably take two sessions to deal with my phobia and he was right. He also gave me the skills to deal with other stressful situations on a day to day basis. Finding Matt was one of the best decisions I’ve made.”

C. Wood

“My daughter had been having panic attacks for 5 years, they were beginning to increase in severity and having an effect on her everyday life. Matt was extremely patient at listening to her and spent time to understand how her fears evolved. He used various techniques to teach her how to deal with her anxieties and was successful in making her less worried. Because Matt treated both me and my daughter with kindness and respect we were able to trust him thus making the process effective.”

Louise Sykes

“Thanks again for running the session for us yesterday and at such short notice. As per my text the feedback has been great… Quite a few people were disappointed they couldn’t make it so I think we will definitely look to do another. Really overwhelmingly positive feedback though! Thank you!”

Ellie Player

Head of Marketing, Geodesys

The mindfulness session was great – really relaxing and excellent breathing techniques. I felt it was a really true demonstration of what ‘Mindfulness’ is all about and the children really understood the activities. His use of glitter bottles was practical and really relevant to their emotional experiences – we also enjoyed the sensory raisin activity!

Daniella Diraimo

Year 3/4 Teacher, Whitehall School, Cambs

I want to thank you for running the [mindfulness] session for the Wellbeing Project last week.  It was ‘spot on’ – everybody seemed to enjoy themselves as well as going away with plenty to think about.  One of the participants is someone who usually never leaves her school and when we were having a cup of tea after the workshop she said that the session had been transformational for her as she had always been busy, both as a child and as an adult,  but now thought it was time for her to find some time to be still

Debbie Higham

Retired Head Teacher, Coordinator for Head Teacher Wellbeing, Ely Diocese

“I was impressed by Matt’s kind and calm approach to the children. His activities were really age group appropriate, fun and motivating for the children. I was amazed at the children’s ability to be so mindful and calm for a concentrated hour long session – it also had a big impact on their learning for the rest of the day.”

Year 1 Teacher, Whitehall School, Cambs
